In my last blog post, I talked about why it’s important for organizations to have different ways of bringing in money, especially as donor support changes over time and major world changes impact funding.

Donors, like people, are all different. In my next couple of blog posts, we’re going to take a closer look at each type of donor, where they get their funding from and how they operate. And most importantly, just what they are looking for from their next potential partner (you).

Multilateral Grant-Making Organisations

A multilateral grant-making organisation is an institution that pools financial resources from multiple countries, governments, or international bodies and distributes grants to support development projects, humanitarian aid, and social programs worldwide. These organisations typically focus on large-scale global challenges such as poverty reduction, education, healthcare, climate change and economic development.

Where do they get their funding?

Multilateral grant-making organisations receive funding from multiple governments and international agencies, which they then allocate to projects and initiatives aligned with their mission. They often work in partnership with governments, non-profits, and local organisations to ensure their funding has the greatest impact.

How do they operate?

These organisations operate transparently, following strict guidelines and criteria to ensure that their grants are used effectively. Their funding is usually provided through structured programs, requiring applicants to meet specific eligibility requirements and demonstrate measurable outcomes.

Some examples of Multilateral Grant-Making Organisations

You’ll recognise these big-name organisations and the impact that they have around the world:

  • United Nations (UN) agencies – such as UNICEF, UNDP, and WHO, which provide funding for global development and humanitarian aid.
  • The World Bank– offers grants and low-interest loans for projects that promote economic development and poverty reduction.
  • The Global Fund – funds programs to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in developing countries.
  • European Union (EU) Development Funds – provide grants for social and economic development in partner countries.

What are Multilateral Grant-Making Organisations looking for from their donors?

Let’s make this practical. These donors are looking for:

  1. Projects that are working towards the Sustainable Development Goals
  2. Projects that show reach – i.e. have great M&E and stats to show how many beneficiaries they are reaching
  3. Projects that show impact and make a significant difference

How can I submit a successful application?

As NPOs, we cannot use a cookie cutter approach when putting together our proposals. If you want to successfully apply for funding from a Multilateral Grant Making Organisation, make sure that you show alignment with these three key requirements.

Remember, grants happen when your project aligns with the mission and mandate of your FUNDER. And donors, like people, are all different.
