I realized in writing the last blog (found here) that it’s not actually the decision that we struggle with as leaders. Deep down we know what needs to be done if we stop and listen to our gut. We try to rationalize things with a pros and cons list but decisions that give us peace involve the mind, the heart, and the instinct.

Learn to listen to your instincts.

Anyway, that’s not why I thought we needed a part 2 – what leaders really struggle with is TAKING ACTION after making the decision. You might say to your partner – that a board member needs to go, or tell your friend – we need to pivot cos the money is not coming in. But on Monday morning when you have the opportunity to take the necessary steps, well, that’s when EVERYTHING ELSE is more important, pressing, urgent, critical, and the list goes on! Because you know, once you take the first step, it transitions from an idea in your head to a plan and then you need to follow the plan. It becomes real! And then you have to live with the consequences, there are no take-backs. That’s the hard part – taking the first step.

I decided after COVID-19 spread (around my middle! 😊) that I need to get fitter but the gym and weights are so daunting. Finally, I decided to JUST MOVE! If that is a 10-minute walk around the block or 5 times up and down the stairs, I would look for ways to just move every day, and hopefully over time, I will be comfortable doing more. However, as mentioned above, deciding in my head was one thing, actually doing it was another! But I screwed up my courage and took the first step, and then the next day I did the same again. Little by little I’m making progress toward my goal – because I took action on my decision as I try to lead myself first.

So go forth and TAKE ACTION! Stop procrastinating the actions you’ve already decided in your heart are necessary and NIKE it – Just do it 😊 I would love to hear how it goes, so please share your tough decisions and the actions you’ve taken to inspire others to do the same.
